3G Adoptions

To answer the question how 3G adoptions have developed in other countries, I have come up with some statistics that you might be interested.

World
Look at the world since year 2000, percentage of 3G connections from overall mobile subscriptions is shown below. While the world average 3G penetration at the end or 2009 is less than 15% (i.e. less than 15 out of 100 mobile connection are 3G), USA/Canada and Western Europe are above average but the penetrations are merely 35%-40%.

North America
Look closer into USA and Canada. The US market is actually the one that carry the 40% 3G penetration. The much smaller market, Canada, has only around 12% penetration. But you might ask what had happened to the US market during 4Q07 and 1Q08 that cause 3G adoption rate went so steep? Could it be an invention of iPhone or an emerging of HSDPA? I guess it might just be some kind of "change of counting method"... who knows!

Western Europe
Western Europe is the second highest 3G penetration in the world. The big five countries, Spain, UK, Italy, France, and Germany, demonstrate 30-40% 3G penetration. I am surprise to see less than 30% 3G penetration in Germany. Does it has something to do with their sky high 3G auction price (highest in the world) back in 2001?

Asia Pacific
Asia Pacific is the home of the two unique markets, which 3G penetrations are exceedingly high - Japan and South Korea. You can say almost all people there, 80-90%,  are using 3G right now. The growth rate is also astounding. Both have reached the point of today's world's average penetration since 5 years ago! Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan are at the tipping point where operators start to sell 3G more than 2G. I personally wonder the case of Hong Kong. The small island should have done better than that considering its wealthiness and hi-tech standard of living. Thailand is located at the bottom of the chart since 3G auction is awaiting for green light from government.
How soon do you think 2G will be vanished from this world? At least, a decade I guess!
