Vodafone UK relaunches 3G femto service

Vodafone UK has relaunched its fledgling femtocell service under a new brand and at lower price points. Targeted at both the consumer and small business segments, Vodafone ‘Sure Signal’ is a small plug-in box that works with a broadband line and claims to significantly improve 3G signals indoors.
The service works with all 3G handsets and can be used by up to four people at any one time. “Customers tell us it is life changing,” said Vodafone CEO Guy Laurence. “If they live or work in a basement for example, the only way they may be able to get consistent mobile coverage could be with a Vodafone Sure Signal.” According to Vodafone UK’s own research, one in five Brits say that they have missed an important event or occasion because of a lack of signal, while 1 in 50 would even consider moving house for better indoor coverage.
The operator launched the service - originally known as Vodafone Access Gateway - in July 2009, claiming it was the first of its kind in Europe. However, the service has not been heavily promoted by Vodafone until now. Sure Signal also lowers the entry prices for the service. Consumers can sign-up for a £50 one-off cost (or £5 a month for 12 months) for price plans of £25 or more. On monthly plans of less than £25 the service costs £120. The cheapest deal for a small business is a one-off cost of £42.56 (or £4.26 a month for 12 months) for new or existing customers on Your Plan for Small Business and Storm price plans of £21.26 or more.
