So.. when will we see LTE?

Qualcomm had originally planned to start sampling LTE chipsets in the second quarter of 2009, but this goal has now slipped by a quarter. This could mean samples will be provided in the third quarter of 2009 and production chips might be delayed to the second half of 2010, which likely miss Verizon's LTE target.

Verizon LTE network plan
  • To launch two trial markets late in 2009
  • An early 2010 launch for its first commercial networks
  • 25 to 30 markets up and running by the end of 2010
  • A complete nationwide LTE network by 2014

Faster 3G for AT&T

AT&T is sticking to its plan to commercially launch LTE in 2010, later than Verizon. Meanwhile, the company is updating its 3G high-speed packet access (HSPA) with an upgrade that increases the maximum possible downlink speed to 7.2 Mbit/s. The actual average download speeds are likely to be closer to 3 Mbit/s or less.
