ไทยคุยมือถือมากเป็นอันดับสองของโลก

สถิติการใช้งานโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ (เฉพาะการสื่อสารด้วยเสียง) ของไทยตกอยู่ที่เฉลี่ยเดือนละ 489 นาทีต่อราย จัดเป็นอันดับสองของโลกรองจากสหรัฐอเมริกา (794) ซึ่งแซงหน้าเพื่อนบ้านอย่าง จีน (442), อินเดีย (376), สิงคโปร์ (373), มาเลเซีย (196), ไต้หวัน (191), อินโนนีเซีย (189) และ ฟิลิปปินส์ (47) ที่น่าสนใจคือค่าเฉลี่ยการใช้งานต่อเดือนนี้ยังสูงกว่าประเทศใหญ่ๆ อย่าง เกาหลีใต้ (294), ฝรั่งเศส (211), สหราชอาณาจักร (192), สเปน (153), ญี่ปุ่น (138), เยอรมัน (108) หรือแม้แต่ มอนเตเนโกร (111) เนื่องจากไม่ได้นับรวมวีดีโอลิงค์ (ฮา)

หรือนี่แสดงว่าราคาค่าโทรในไทยถูกเกินไปจริงๆ

Vodafone บอกลา unlimited data package

Vittorio Colao ซีอีโอของ Vodafone เป็นอีกหนึ่งรายที่ออกมายืนยันว่า unlimited data package กำลังจะต้องหมดไป Calao กล่าวในงาน Nokia World 2010 ซึ่งจัดขึ้นในลอนดอนว่า ตลาด smartphone เริ่มขยายวงกว้างไปสู่ผู้บริโภคทั่วไปและไม่ได้จำกัดอยู่เฉพาะกลุ่มลูกค้า high-end เหมือนเดิม อนาคตการใช้งาน data กำลังจะบูมซึ่งโครงข่ายก็จำเป็นต้องเตรียมพร้อมรองรับให้ได้ แต่การคิดราคาจำเป็นต้องเปลี่ยน ราคาจะต้องสะท้อนการใช้งานจริงของลูกค้าและภาระที่เกิดขึ้นในโครงข่าย

MVNO

Mobile Virtual Network Operator หรือ MVNO คือผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่โดยที่ไม่ได้ครอบครองคลื่นความถี่หรือโครงข่ายที่จำเป็นทั้งหมดในการให้บริการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ แต่ได้ทำข้อตกลงกับ Mobile Network Operator (MNO) ในการใช้ทรัพยากรดังกล่าวเพื่อให้บริการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ได้ เนื่องจาก MVNO ไม่สามารถแข่งกับผู้ให้บริการรายใหญ่ที่เป็นเจ้าของคลื่นความถี่ (และโครงข่ายที่จำเป็นอื่นๆ) ได้ จึงมักจะใช้กลยุทธ์เจาะกลุ่มตลาดที่มีความต้องการเฉพาะทางเช่น กลุ่มนักเรียน กลุ่มแฟนทีมฟุตบอล กลุ่มแรงงานต่างด้าว ฯลฯ

ปมคลื่นความถี่โทรคมไทย.. ใครจะสาง?

การให้บริการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่จำเป็นต้องอาศัยคลื่นความถี่วิทยุ ย่านความถี่สำหรับให้บริการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่แบ่งเป็นย่านความถี่ต่ำ 850/900 MHz และย่านความถี่สูง 1800 MHz ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่ใช้สำหรับให้บริการ 2G ส่วนบริการ 3G ที่กำลังจะมีการประมูลนั้นใช้ย่าน 2100 MHz การจัดสรรคลื่นความถี่ที่ผ่านมาในแต่ละย่านนั้นต่างกรรมต่างวาระ ขึ้นอยู่กับสัญญาสัมปทาน ผู้ประกอบการแต่ละรายจึงมีความได้เปรียบเสียเปรียบในการแข่งขันที่ต่างกันไป การประมูล 3G เป็นก้าวแรกที่จะเปลี่ยนจาก ระบบสัมปทาน สู่ ระบบใบอนุญาต ซึ่งมุ่งให้เกิดความเท่าเทียมกันในการแข่งขัน ทำให้เราต้องย้อนกลับมามองว่าการแข่งขันในตลาดปัจจุบันมีความเท่าเทียมกันเพียงพอที่จะก่อให้เกิด "การแข่งขันเสรีอย่างเป็นธรรม" แล้วหรือไม่?

กทช. ออกร่างประกาศฯ ว่าด้วยการครอบงำกิจการโดยคนต่างด้าว

กทช. ออกร่างประกาศฯ ว่าด้วยการกำหนดข้อห้ามการกระทำที่มีลักษณะเป็นการครอบงำกิจการโดยคนต่างด้าว และกำหนดจะให้มีการรับฟังความคิดเห็นสาธารณะสำหรับร่างประกาศฯ นี้ในวันศุกร์ที่ 20 สิงหาคม 2553 (ดูรายละเอียดได้ที่ กทช.)

พระราชบัญญัติ การประกอบกิจการโทรคมนาคม พ.ศ. 2544 มาตรา 80

ประเด็นการแปลงสัมปทานกำลังเป็นข่าวกันในหน้าหนังสือพิมพ์นำโดยกระทรวงการคลังและกระทรวงไอซีที โดยตั้งเป้าว่าจะแปลงสัญญาสัปทานเป็นใบอนุญาตที่มีอายุ 15 ปี (เท่ากับอายุใบอนุญาต 3G ที่กำลังจะประมูล) และลดส่วนแบ่งรายได้เหลือ 12.5% (จากเดิมประมาณ 25%) การแปลงสัมปทานเป็นใบอนุญาตนั้นอาศัยความในมาตรา 80 (บทเฉพาะกาล) ของ พรบ. ประกอบกิจการโทรคมนาคม พ.ศ. 2544 จึงนำมาลงไว้ให้พิจารณากันครับ ประเด็นก็คือเมื่อแปลงสัญญาสัมปทานเป็นใบอนุญาตแล้วอายุของใบอนุญาตจะเท่ากับระยะเวลาที่เหลืออยู่ของสัมปทานเดิม (AIS 2558, DTAC 2561, True Move 2556, DPC 2556) อันนี้เป็นโจทย์หินที่ทีมคณะทำงานต้องขบให้แตก

AT&T โทษ Alcatel-Lucent ว่าทำให้อัพโหลดช้า

หลังจากมีข่าวผู้ใช้จำนวนมากรายงานว่าความเร็วอินเทอร์เน็ตฝั่งอัพโหลดของ AT&T ตกลงต่ำกว่า 100kbps ตอนนี้ก็ถึงคิวที่ AT&T จะออกมาแถลงไขโดย AT&T อ้างว่าพบปัญหาจากซอฟต์แวร์ในอุปกรณ์ของ Alcatel-Lucent ที่ทำให้การเชื่อมต่อกับอุปกรณ์ที่รองรับเทคโนโลยี HSUPA (เช่น iPhone 4) มีปัญหาได้ความเร็วในการอัพโหลดต่ำ ซึ่งตอนนี้ AT&T ได้หาวิธีแก้ไขเป็นการเฉพาะหน้าไปแล้ว

กทช. ประกาศร่างหลักเกณฑ์ออกใบอนุญาต 3G ฉบับปรับปรุง

หลังจากที่ กทช. ได้ออกร่างหลักเกณฑ์ฯ 3G (ดูเอกสารอธิบาย) และจัดรับฟังความคิดเห็นสาธารณะ เมื่อวันที่ 25 มิ.ย. ที่ผ่านมา (ดู 10 คำถามกับ 3G ฉบับ Blognone และ จดหมายเปิดผนึกถึง กทช.)

ล่าสุดวันที่ 5 ก.ค. กทช. ได้ประกาศร่างหลักเกณฑ์และวิธีการอนุญาตให้ใช้คลื่นความถี่เพื่อการประกอบกิจการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ IMT ย่าน 2.1 GHz (ผู้ที่เคยอ่านร่างฯ มาก่อนแล้วสามารถดูข้อแตกต่างได้จากตารางสรุปการเปลี่ยนแปลง) ซึ่งร่างนี้น่าจะเป็นฉบับสุดท้ายแล้ว โดย กทช. คาดว่าอีก 15 วัน จะส่งเรื่องไปยังสำนักงานเลขาธิการคณะรัฐมนตรีเพื่อประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา

อินเดียจะเหลือผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์มือถือเพียง 3 ราย!

Sanjay Kapoor ซีอีโอของ Bharti Airtel ผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่รายใหญ่ที่สุดของอินเดีย เชื่อว่าการลงทุนโครงข่าย 3G ราคาแพงจะทำให้ผู้ประกอบการต้องขึ้นราคาเพื่อความอยู่รอด และตลาดในระยะยาวจะเหลือผู้ให้บริการที่มีกำไรเพียง 3 ราย Kapoor ยังบอกอีกว่าการตั้งราคาในปัจจุบันไม่ได้เป็นไปตามกลไกเศรษฐกิจ (แข่งกันลดราคามากเกินไป) ตอนนี้ผู้ให้บริการทุกรายต้องเริ่มมุ่งทำกำไรจากเงินที่ลงทุนไป (จ่ายค่าคลื่น 3G ไปเกือบห้าแสนล้านบาท) กดดันผู้ให้บริการราคาประหยัด (เพื่อให้มีกำไรมากขึ้น) และผลักดันให้เกิดการควบรวมกิจการระหว่างผู้ให้บริการในตลาดทั้ง 14 ราย

อียูสั่งห้ามชาร์จค่าดาต้าโรมมิ่งเกิน 50 ยูโร โดยไม่ได้รับอนุญาต

ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 ก.ค. เป็นต้นไปผู้ใช้บริการดาต้าโรมมิ่งในยุโรปจะถูกเรียกเก็บเงินไม่เกิน 50 ยูโร ถ้าเกินจากนี้จะต้องแจ้งให้ผู้ใช้บริการทราบและต้องได้รับความยินยอมอย่างชัดแจ้งก่อน

สหภาพยุโรป (อียู) ออกกฎดังกล่าวเพื่อปกป้องผู้บริโภคที่ไม่ค่อยสันทัดในเรื่องนี้ ก่อนหน้านี้ผู้ใช้บริการชาวเยอรมันเคยถูกเรียกเก็บเงินสูงถึง 46,000 ยูโร (เกือบสองล้านบาท) หลังจากดูทีวีผ่านมือถือในฝรั่งเศส นอกจากนี้ อียู ยังหวังว่าการออกกฎนี้จะเป็นปัจจัยหนึ่งที่ทำให้ค่าบริการดาต้าโรมมิ่งในยุโรปถูกลง

Femtocell ฟรีจาก SoftBank

SoftBank Mobile ผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ซึ่งใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 3 ของญี่ปุ่นแจกสถานีฐานขนาดเล็กสำหรับใช้ในบ้านหรือที่เรารู้จักกันในนาม femtocell ให้ใช้ฟรีตั้งแต่เดือนพฤษภาคมที่ผ่านมา (ข่าวเก่า) ตอนนี้มีรายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมว่านอกจากจะให้อุปกรณ์ femtocell ฟรีแล้วยังให้ ADSL ฟรีอีกด้วย โดยต้องเซ็นสัญญา 2 ปี

บริการ femtocell ของ SoftBank จะใช้โหมด open access นั่นหมายความว่าเปิดให้ลูกค้าทั่วไปของ SoftBank ใช้ได้ด้วย แต่บริการ femtocell ส่วนใหญ่ในปัจจุบันจะให้บริการแบบ closed access คือให้บริการแก่ผู้ที่มาลงทะเบียนเท่านั้น (AT&T's 3G Microcell, Vodafone's Sure Signal)

3G ที่รอคอย

เมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ 25 มิถุนายนที่ผ่านมา กทช. ได้จัดรับฟังความคิดเห็นสาธารณะเรื่องร่างหลักเกณฑ์การอนุญาตประกอบกิจการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ 3G (เอกสารประกอบ) ก่อนอื่นต้องขอชมเชยร่างประกาศฯ ฉบับนี้ว่าทำออกมาได้ดีกว่าฉบับที่ผ่านๆ มา ยิ่งได้ทราบว่าเป็นร่างฯ ที่มาจากการระดมสมองของคนไทยด้วยกันเอง โดยไม่ต้องไปจ้างที่ปรึกษาฝรั่งราคาแพงเหมือนร่างฯ ฉบับก่อนๆ ยิ่งชื่นใจและยิ่งมั่นใจว่าคนไทยเท่านั้นที่จะสามารถแก้ปัญหาของคนไทยด้วยกันได้ อย่างไรก็ดียังมีอีกหลายประเด็นที่อยากเสนอให้พิจารณาเพื่อความสมบูรณ์ของร่างฯ ต่อไปครับ

ประมูล BWA ที่อินเดียจบที่เกือบสามแสนล้านบาท!

ในขณะที่วันนี้ (11 มิ.ย. 2553) กทช. เปิดรับฟังความเห็นเพื่อกำหนดทิศทางการออกใบอนุญาต Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) หรือที่รู้จักกันในนาม WiMAX การประมูลคลื่นความถี่ในย่าน 2.3 GHz สำหรับ BWA ในอินเดียก็เพิ่งจบลงเช่นกันหลังจากผ่านมา 16  วัน 117 รอบ ด้วยมูลค่ารวมกว่า 2.84 แสนล้านบาท ทะลุทุกการคาดการณ์อีกแล้ว

3.9G คืออะไร?

เป็นที่ถกเถียงกันมากตั้งแต่  พ.อ.นที ศุกลรัตน์ กรรมการ คณะกรรมการกิจการโทรคมนาคมแห่งชาติ (กทช.) ออกมาให้ข่าวการออกใบอนุญาต 3.9G (แทนที่จะเป็น 3G) ว่าตัวเลข 3.9G คืออะไร? ใช้เทคโนโลยีอะไร? และที่สำคัญต่างกับ 3G อย่างไร?

มีรายงานว่า MobilTel ผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่รายใหญ่ในประเทศบัลแกเรียสั่งระงับเบอร์ 0888-888-888 หลังจากที่เจ้าของเบอร์นี้ทุกรายในช่วง 10 ปีที่ผ่านมาล้วนแต่ต้องมีอันเป็นไปก่อนวัยอันควร

กทช. เดินเครื่อง 3.9G เต็มกำลัง!

กทช. เร่งผลักดันให้ออกใบอนุญาต 3.9G เตรียมเปิดประชาพิจารณ์ปลายเดือนนี้ เริ่มประมูลเดือน ส.ค. เสร็จสิ้น ก.ย. หวังให้ได้ใช้กันภายในปีนี้

วันที่ 26 พ.ค. 2553 พ.อ.นที ศุกลรัตน์ กรรมการ คณะกรรมการกิจการโทรคมนาคมแห่งชาติ (กทช.) และประธานคณะทำงาน 3.9 จี เริ่มให้ความชัดเจนว่าการประมูลใบอนุญาตจะเสร็จสิ้นประมาณเดือน ก.ย. ปีนี้และคาดว่าคนไทยจะได้ใช้บริการดังกล่าวภายในสิ้นปีนี้

AT&T เริ่มจำกัดปริมาณการใช้งาน data

ตั้งแต่วันที่ 7 มิถุนายนนี้เป็นต้นไป AT&T ผู้ให้บริการรายใหญ่อันดับ 2 ของอเมริกาจะเปลี่ยนแผนให้บริการจากเดิมที่ลูกค้าสามารถใช้ data ได้ไม่จำกัด โดยจ่ายเดือนละ US$29.99  เป็น 2 แผนใหม่

• DataPlus: US$15 ใช้ได้ 200MB เกินจากนี้คิด US$15 ต่อ 200MB
• DataPro: US$25 ใช้ได้ 2GB เกินจากนี้คิด US$10 ต่อ 1GB
  

ประมูลคลื่นเยอรมัน จบที่ 1.75 แสนล้านบาท

แม้จะไม่โด่งดังเท่ากับการประมูลคลื่น 3G ในอินเดีย แต่การประมูลคลื่นความถี่ในเยอรมันก็เพิ่งปิดฉากลงในเวลาไล่เลี่ยกันหลังจากผ่านมา 27 วัน 224 รอบ ในวันที่ 20 พ.ค. 2553 ที่ผ่านมา งานนี้รัฐบาลเยอรมันได้ไปราว 1.75 แสนล้านบาท

ประมูล 3G อินเดีย ห้าแสนล้าน!

19 พ.ค. 2553 - อินเดียปิดฉากการประมูลใบอนุญาต 3G แล้วหลังจากผ่านมา 34 วัน 183 รอบ มูลค่ารวมกว่าห้าแสนล้านบาท!

Bharti ผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่รายใหญ่ที่สุดในอินเดียต้องจ่ายเงินสูงสุดราว 9.4 หมื่นล้านบาทเพื่อให้บริการใน 13 พื้นที่ ตามมาด้วย Vodafone 8.9 หมื่นล้านบาทสำหรับใบอนุญาตใน 9 พื้นที่ และ Reliance 6.5 หมื่นล้านบาทสำหรับใบอนุญาตใน 11 พื้นที่ มูลค่ารวมของการประมูลนั้นอยู่ที่ 5.2 แสนล้านบาท (เกือบสองเท่าจากที่ทางการอินเดียเคยคาดการณ์ไว้)

วันที่ 18 พฤษภาคม 2553 - การประมูลคลื่นความถี่ 3G ในอินเดียดำเนินมาถึงวันที่ 33 มีการประมูลผ่านไปแล้ว 180 รอบ ใบอนุญาตที่แพงที่สุดคือใบอนุญาตของ Delhi ซึ่งราคาพุ่งถึงใบละ 25,028 ล้านบาทต่อความถี่ 5 MHz หนึ่งคู่ หรือ INR 3,284 crore (อัตราแลกเปลี่ยนธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย ณ วันที่ 18 พฤษภาคม 2553: 1 รูปี = 0.7621 บาท) แต่ถ้าใครต้องการให้บริการครอบคลุมทั่วทั้งประเทศแล้วละก็ จะต้องจ่ายเงินอย่างน้อย 126,616 ล้านบาท หรือ INR 16,614 crore เพื่อประมูลความถี่จากทั้ง 22 พื้นที่ให้บริการ การประมูลยังคงดำเนินต่อไป ราคาสุดท้ายจะจบที่เท่าไหร่ยังไม่มีใครรู้

Japan, America, and Western Europe users pay the most expensive mobile prices

Wireless Intelligence ranked top 25 mobile operators by revenue. On the top was China Mobile, the largest mobile operator in terms of subscribers and revenue. The second place was Vodafone group, based mainly in Western Europe. American operators: Verizon (#4), AT&T (#6), and Sprint (#10), all were in the top ten. However,  Japanese operators: NTT DoCoMo (#7), KDDI (#9), and SoftBank Mobile (#13) were among the highest ARPU in the list, ranging from US $60 to US $80. Indian-based operators were absent from the list.

Network Outsourcing Deals

Australia's 3rd largest mobile operator VHA - a 50:50 joint-venture between Vodafone and Hutchison - is to outsource its network operations to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) in a seven-year deal expected to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The contract includes service management for a number of key parts of VHA’s mobile network - core, transmission and radio networks - and equipment supply for its core network. The deal was VHA’s "first major network contract” since the company’s formation.

ราคาใบอนุญาต 3G ที่อินเดียทะลุ 1,300 ล้านเหรียญสหรัฐแล้ว

Unprecedented Data Usage

Unprecedented data usage เป็นคำที่ AT&T เรียกปัญหาปริมาณการใช้งาน data สูงอย่างไม่เคยมีมาก่อน (หรืออาจเรียก congestion, network choking, backhaul choking, ฯลฯ) ปัญหานี้ส่งผลกระทบต่อทั้งโครงข่ายและลูกค้าของ AT&T เอง

Time-based vs. Volume-based Pricing

For Thai market, awaiting for 3G auction, data service is quite new to majority of users. It's actually also new to operators since there are two camps for the data service charging scheme. One is Time-based, where customers are charged per minute. Another is Volume-based, where customers are charged per megabyte.

O2 and Orange UK

Recent survey by Siroda (and commissioned by O2) reported that O2 was the fastest operator on average in the UK. While the results were more mixed throughout the country, Orange seemed to be at the bottom of the table.

For those who are not familiar with UK mobile market, there're 5 incumbents, which are, sorted by number of subscribers at the end of 2009: O2 (Telefonica) - 21.3m, Vodafone - 19.1m, T-Mobile - 16.7m, Orange - 16.3m, and 3 (Hutchison) - 4.9m. The first 4 are the incumbents since 2G era. The last one has entered the market with 3G only network since 2003.

Spectrum. One of the fundamental elements for mobile services. In Thailand, the most populous band is located around 1800 MHz, as shown in the picture below. The "standard" spectrum configurations specified by 3GPP (a.k.a. E-UTRA Operating Bands) are shown in grey with band's number indicated. Thailand's spectrum assignments are shown in colors. The 1800 MHz band is used in Thailand for providing GSM services. DTAC has major portion of the spectrum, 2x49.6 MHz out of 2x75 MHz resource. True Move and Digital Phone Company (DPC, an AIS subsidiary) have 2x12.6 MHz, each. Note, again, that none of these operator is the owner of the spectrum. They are concessionaires of State Enterprise CAT Telecom. DTAC has been in a concession since 1991. The latter two companies started in 1997 and 1998, respectively.

Thailand's mobile market overview - ARPU

Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) is basically the total revenue divided by the number of subscribers. It is the amount of money, on average, that a user is willing to pay to operator each month. From this view, the ARPU is therefore an indicator telling operators the quality of subscribers they have gained. As we have already known from the previous post that the number of connections reported by operators does not necessarily equal to the number of subscribers, using the ARPU calculated from the number of connections might be distorted. However, it can be used perfectly in relative view, i.e. when we compare amongst operators.

For those who are not familiar with Thailand, there are 3 major mobile operators whose customer bases are combined to 98% of the market. None of these is a spectrum license owner. They operate through a concession granted from one of two state enterprises; TOT and CAT.

3G Adoptions

To answer the question how 3G adoptions have developed in other countries, I have come up with some statistics that you might be interested.

World
Look at the world since year 2000, percentage of 3G connections from overall mobile subscriptions is shown below. While the world average 3G penetration at the end or 2009 is less than 15% (i.e. less than 15 out of 100 mobile connection are 3G), USA/Canada and Western Europe are above average but the penetrations are merely 35%-40%.

• ผู้แทนกระทรวงการคลัง

กฎหมายฉบับนี้มีเพื่อให้การให้สัมปทานหรือร่วมทุนระหว่างภาครัฐและเอกชน มีหลักเกณฑ์การตัดสินที่ชัดเจน เป็นไปได้ด้วยความถูกต้อง โปร่งใส และมีกลไกการตรวจสอบจาำกหลายหน่วยงาน มิใช่จากผู้มีอำนาจตัดสินใจผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง (ดู หมายเหตุท้าย พรบ.)



พรบ. นี้กล่าวถึงกระบวนการที่จะให้เอกชนเข้ามาร่วมงานกับรัฐ โดยแบ่งเป็น 5 หมวดดังนี้

Google pulls support for Chinese Android phones

Google has withdrawn its support for two new Chinese smartphones based on its Android platform, as its relations with China continue to deteriorate.

Vodafone UK relaunches 3G femto service

Vodafone UK has relaunched its fledgling femtocell service under a new brand and at lower price points. Targeted at both the consumer and small business segments, Vodafone ‘Sure Signal’ is a small plug-in box that works with a broadband line and claims to significantly improve 3G signals indoors.

AIS to invest THB11B in 2010

Thai operator AIS, the country’s largest by subscribers, has set an investment budget, excluding any potential investment in third generation services, for 2010 of about THB11 billion (US$335.3 million), which is on a par with 2009's amount, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The firm targets 2010 revenue growth at 3 percent, in line with the general economic growth forecast for this year. The operator also said it reached an agreement with state-owned TOT PCL to allow its customers to access 3G services on TOT's spectrum from Feb. 1.

M1 to trial LTE with NSN

Telegeography reports that MobileOne (M1) of Singapore is laying the groundwork for a smooth transition to Long Term Evolution technology and plans to commence an LTE trial next month. The pilot tests will be carried out in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks and will last two months.

Google considers China exit

Google is considering closing its China search site and leaving the mainland market because of censorship issues and recent cyber-attacks.

Gartner: Mobile apps spend to hit US$6.2B in 2010

Consumer spending on mobile application stores will reach US$6.2 billion this year, according to new Gartner figures. Combined with expected advertising revenues of around US$0.6 billion, total app store revenues are forecast to hit US$6.77 billion in 2010. The research firm said that app stores will exceed 4.5 billion downloads this year, and surpass 21.6 billion by 2013. Free downloads will account for 82 percent of all downloads in 2010, and will account for 87 percent of downloads in 2013, the firm said. Download revenue is said to have exceeded US$4.2 billion in 2009 and will grow to US$29.5 billion by the end of 2013.

Verizon and AT&T cut fees as price war escalates

Verizon Wireless and AT&T – the two largest mobile operators in the US – both cut their mobile tariffs late last week amid fears that an escalating price war in the country could affect operator revenue.

Voda outsources M2M services

Machine-to-machine (M2M) specialist Numerex has secured a deal with Vodafone to offer its clients M2M solutions via the operator’s network. The agreement allows Numerex to promote Vodafone M2M services as part of its Numerex DNA (Device, Network and Application) and FAST platform along with an array of other M2M products and services.

Clearwire to launch WiMAX smartphone this year

US-based WiMAX service provider Clearwire says it will launch a dual-mode smartphone in the second half of this year, according to a Financial Times (FT) report.
